About Piccadilly Circus
Piccadilly Circus is a busy road junction in London's West End, where five major streets come together. Wrapped around the corner of one of the buildings is the Piccadilly Lights, a soaring curved screen showing a bright patchwork of signs 24hrs a day. Advertising signs in a variety of different forms have lit up that corner for over a century. Across the junction stands the Shaftesbury Memorial Fountain, a bronze fountain topped by a winged archer. When it went up in the 1890s it was one of the earliest statues ever cast in aluminum. This whole area is usually packed with people. Right after sunset is an amazing time to be here, while the sky still has some colour and the screen doesn't overpower everything. Red London buses and black cabs swing past the screen constantly, which makes it a natural place to experiment light trails or a bit of motion blur. From the fountain steps, you can frame the winged figure against the glowing screen or try your hand at urban photography while people hurry by. Early morning brings the quietest streets if you want some space to spread out for architecture photography. Piccadilly Circus tube station sits right underneath, with exits on every corner. Aim to stay from sunset into full dark and you'll come away with two very different sets of compositions. (London, England, United Kingdom)
