Piha Beach is renowned for black sand, rugged rock formations and strong waves ideal for surfing, plus its stunning panoramic views looking out over the Tasman Sea. Piha’s black iron sand swept up the coast after the eruption of Taupo eons ago. It is a small bay with large remnant volcanic rocky islands at either end. The southern end of Piha beach is guarded by Taitomo Island or Camel Rock. While the northern end of the beach is guarded by Lion Rock. (Piha, New Zealand)
