About Pil Tor
Pil Tor stands on Blackslade Down with its two walls of granite and strip of moorland running between them. The rock is split in flat horizontal layers, stacked like slabs. That layering makes an interesting shooting subject. Being low near the base of the rocks lets the layering act like leading lines. Up here the views open out on every side. Haytor and Saddle Tor sit on the skyline one way, and Widecombe drops away below the other. Ponies often graze around here and if you are lucky will appear to be in your frames. They add scale to rock that otherwise reads flat. Low sun spreads across the moorland beautifully. Mist sitting in the valley below Widecombe is worth having an early start to your day. Parking is free, in small car parks and pull-offs along the B3387 or at the Hemsworthy Gate Car Parking Area. From the road it is a short walk up grass trail. A loop taking in Top Tor and Tunhill Rocks runs about 3 km and adds many photogenic viewpoints to your shooting adventure. (Widecombe-in-the-Moor, Devon, England)
