About Clapper Bridge
Postbridge Clapper Bridge is an amazing little hidden gem tucked away just off of the B3212. This medieval bridge was originally built for packhorses carrying tin off the moor. Two granite piers stand in the river toppedwith three enormous slabs laid across them as the pathway. Clapper bridges are rare, with only around forty recorded in the whole country. Ideally try to set up to capture it from the riverbank rather than the road. Getting down near the water lets you highlight the slabs and keep the B3212 bridge out of frame. Plus side on shows the gaps between the piers and the way the huge slabs have been balanced. A slow shutter on the East Dart softens the water running under it. Autumn will add pops of colour along the banks to contrast against the grey granite. Parking is in the village car park a short walk away. The bridge is well preserved and still in a safe condition so you can actually walk across it. Coaches come through from May to October, so try to plan your visit for an early morning or midweek to have the area to yourself. Bellever also has a clapper bridge a couple of miles downstream.
