About Pilisszántó Cave (Pilisszántói-kőfülke)
The Pilisszántó Cave (Pilisszántói-kőfülke) sits high in the limestone crag above the village of Pilisszántó. The Hungarian word kőfülke means rock niche, which tells you roughly what to expect. This is a shallow chamber cut back into the cliff rather than a cave you can explore. The entrance is a wide arch in the rock face that opens into a single room with a surprisingly high ceiling. Frost has broken the far wall into blocks so square they look like they were cut and quarried. Above that the roof lifts into a dome, pocked with smooth round hollows where warm water once ate into the limestone. The cave entrance faces east, so ideally try and get up there for sunrise when the light runs right across the floor and up the back wall. Shooting from inside first lets you use the arch to frame the trees and the slope outside. Then move out and shoot back into the opening once the sun has climbed high enough to fill the shadows. A wide lens earns is the perfect addition to your kit here since there isn't much room to back up. Getting there means a steep walk. The marked trail climbs from Pilisszántó past an old quarry cut into the hillside, and the green cave symbol leads you right up to the entrance.
