About Basilica of Esztergom
Esztergom Basilica stands majestically on Castle Hill above the Danube, where the river runs along the border between Hungary and Slovakia. It is the largest church in Hungary, exactly 100 metres from the crypt floor to the top of the dome. The building is neoclassical and was consecrated in 1856, on a site that has carried a cathedral since Saint Stephen's time. Because the cathedral stands to high there are endless vantage points. Along the river you can shoot from Mária Valéria Bridge, or the Slovak bank at Štúrovo, and the whole hill sits above the water with the dome on top. On the cathedral grounds the columned front and the flight of steps create an amazing wide frame from below. The square in front creates amazing leading lines that pull your eye right to the columns and dome. Inside, the altarpiece is the largest in the world painted on a single canvas. The dome is a worthwhile shooting subject itself, plus there is a gallery running inside it. Four hundred steps, or an elevator, takes you up to the viewing terrace with an amazing view over the Danube Bend and Slovakia sitting across the water. The tower, treasury, crypt and panorama room each need a ticket, with combined ones available. Walking into the church itself and exploring the grounds are free.
