Playa Hermosa is a laid-back Pacific beach known for its dark volcanic sand, consistent surf, and stunning sunsets. Tucked along the coast of Guanacaste Province, it offers a quieter, more relaxed alternative to busier tourist hubs making it the perfect spot for unwinding, spotting wildlife, and soaking in the natural beauty of Costa Rica’s shoreline. The beach itself curves along a sheltered bay in the Gulf of Papagayo, with green hillsides framing both ends. That natural backdrop gives you a strong colour contrast between the dark sand, blue water, and lush vegetation that works in just about any light. Trees line much of the beach and provide shaded pockets that double as natural framing elements for wider compositions. Howler monkeys are common in the branches overhead, so you might get to do some wildlife photography without even leaving the sand. The rocky headlands at both ends of the bay are worth exploring too, especially during low tide when tide pools and textured rock formations open up. Sunset is the main event. The bay faces west and gets a full unobstructed view of the sun dropping into the Pacific, and the dark sand picks up warm reflections that really pop in that golden light. Because the beach stays relatively quiet even in peak season, you can usually find a clean stretch of shoreline to work with. It is only about 30 minutes from Guanacaste Airport, making it an easy first or last stop on a trip. (Playa Hermosa, Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica)
