Perched along the central California coast, this viewpoint on the Point Buchon Trail delivers a striking look down at dramatic Miguelito shale formations, where wave-carved arches and jagged rock outcroppings jut into the Pacific. The geology here is the main subject, so work with a wide angle lens to capture the full scale of the arches against the ocean, or zoom in to isolate the layered, folded shale textures that reveal millions of years of coastal pressure. Shooting from slightly elevated trail positions gives you a strong downward angle into the coves, letting the turquoise water fill the gaps between rocks. Morning light rakes across the stone at a low angle and brings out the texture and color contrast beautifully; overcast days also work well by softening glare off the water. The trail is accessed through PG&E land near Diablo Canyon, so check current access permits before visiting, and wear sturdy footwear on the uneven coastal path.
