Between Station Pier and Princes Pier in Port Melbourne, the Beacon Cove Promenade runs along Port Phillip Bay with the Port Melbourne Front Lighthouse standing just offshore. The lighthouse is an eye catching white tower with a bright red top so it looks like the tower is wearing a hat. The lighthouse dates back to the early 1920s and was originally built from local timber. From the promenade you can easily capture it using a standard zoom to frame it cleanly against open water, plus on a still morning the bay can be flat enough for a sharp reflection beneath it. Later in the day the sun drops across the bay, and in summer it sets far enough to the southwest to put the tower in silhouette against the colour. Uniquely this lighthouse is actually part of a set of identical twin lighthouses, and the only twin that is actually near any water. If you head to the opposite end of Beacon Vista you will find its twin looking out over a neighbourhood. The street runs straight toward the water, and from behind the rear tower you can experiment with using a telephoto lens to stack the two lights together in a single frame or use the street as the perfect leading line out to the bay. Along waterfront, the promenade is a paved path with benches, and cruise ships tie up at Station Pier in the warmer months. Make sure to have some extra time to explore the area while you are here.
