Portal of the Folded Wings Shrine to Aviation
This ornate 1924 rotunda sits inside Valhalla Memorial Park Cemetery in Burbank, serving as both an aviation shrine and burial site for fifteen early aviation pioneers. The 75-foot dome is covered in colorful mosaic tile, sculpted reliefs, and detailed stonework that reward close inspection and tight compositions. Shoot wide to capture the full rotunda against the sky, then move in with a standard or short telephoto lens to isolate the intricate tilework, bronze figures, and memorial plaques. Overcast days soften the light and reduce harsh shadows across the curved surfaces, making colors pop without blowing out the pale stonework. Midday sun can work if you position yourself to use the dome's shadow creatively. The site is inside an active cemetery, so visit respectfully and quietly; access is straightforward during cemetery hours with free parking nearby. A 24-70mm range covers most compositions well.
