Rideau Canal, Locks 1 - 8
These eight staircase locks connect the Ottawa River to the Rideau Canal, rising dramatically beneath the turrets of the Fairmont Château Laurier in the heart of downtown Ottawa. The layered composition of water, stone lockwalls, historic gates, and the castle-like hotel behind makes this one of the most photographically rich spots in the city. Shoot from the pedestrian bridge at the top of the lock flight for a strong leading line perspective looking down toward the river, or get low at water level along the stone walls to emphasize the depth of the locks. Summer brings boat traffic that adds life and scale to the scene, while early morning gives you calm water reflections and soft light before crowds arrive. A wide angle lens handles the full staircase well, and the Château Laurier responds beautifully to golden hour and blue hour light. (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
