Sapper's Staircase
Sapper's Staircase is a historic stone stairway carved into the limestone escarpment in downtown Ottawa, offering an elevated and often overlooked angle on the Château Laurier and the surrounding Parliament Hill area. From the upper landing, you can frame the château's turrets and copper roofline rising above the treeline, while the staircase itself provides strong leading lines descending into the frame. The narrow, stone-walled passage also works well as a subject in its own right, especially in winter when snow and ice cling to the walls. Early morning gives you soft light and empty stairs, which is ideal for long exposures or clean architectural shots. A wide to standard focal length, around 24 to 35mm, works well here. The staircase connects the ByWard Market area down to the Rideau Canal level and is accessible year-round, though the steps can be icy in winter. (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
