Tucked behind a school in the Owen D. Young Central School District, this quiet outdoor learning center packs in more than you might expect, with a wooded trail leading past an old sawmill site, small caves, and a photogenic waterfall. The waterfall is the main draw, and you will want to position yourself low and close to emphasize its scale against the mossy rock face; a wide angle lens works well here. Overcast days are ideal since the forest canopy combined with direct sun can create harsh contrasts, and diffused light brings out the rich greens and textures in the surrounding stone. The caves add interesting framing opportunities if you shoot from inside looking out toward the falls. Wear sturdy footwear as the ground near the water can be slippery, and bring a polarizing filter to cut glare on the moving water. (Van Hornesville, New York, United States)
