About Roman Bridge
The Roman Bridge at Ilidža is a low stone bridge of seven arches crossing the Bosna river on the western edge of Sarajevo. Ottoman builders put it up in the first half of the 1500s using salvaged stone from Aquae Sulphurae, the Roman spa settlement that stood nearby, so there are carved blocks and worn reliefs set into the masonry if you walk the sides and look closely. It is now a pedestrian bridge and you can still walk the whole length of it, although it doesn't really take you anywhere so it's more for the views. The peaceful setting adds to how photogenic this bridge already is. The river here is slow and very clear, and the banks are lined with grass and trees. This means there will be nothing modern in any of your frames. You can easily get down to the water's edge and highlight how the arches reflect into full circles on a still morning. Plus mist usually comes off the river in the early mornings and sits in under the arches. Shooting from the bank along the length gives you the row of arches as an amazing leading line as they pull away from you, or a longer lens from further downstream stacks them together to bring out the mix of old and newer stone. There is a peaceful little park around the bridge with benches if you want to relax and wait for just the right light to appear. (Ilidža, Sarajevo Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina)
