The Ross Fountain is a striking cast-iron Victorian sculpture sitting in Princes Street Gardens, with Edinburgh Castle rising dramatically on its volcanic rock directly behind it. This layered composition, ornate fountain in the foreground and the castle towering above, is what makes this spot so rewarding to shoot. Position yourself low and close to emphasize the fountain's decorative details, including the mermaids, cherubs, and four allegorical figures at the top, while keeping the castle centered in the background. A short to mid telephoto lens in the 50-85mm range works well for compressing that foreground-to-castle depth. Overcast days give you even light without harsh shadows on the ironwork, though golden hour light from the west catches the metalwork beautifully. The gardens are free to enter and easy to walk through, with multiple angles available by simply circling the fountain. (Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom)
