Edinburgh Old Town Cityscape

From the esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, you get one of the most layered cityscapes in Europe, with the jagged rooflines of the Royal Mile stretching down toward Holyrood Park and the volcanic bulk of Arthur's Seat filling the background. Position yourself along the low wall at the esplanade's edge and use a mid-range telephoto, something around 70-135mm, to compress the scene and stack the Gothic spire of The Hub against the hillside behind it. Early morning gives you clean light and far fewer tourists on the streets below, and overcast days work surprisingly well here by keeping the stone tones even and moody. A wide shot from slightly left of center lets you capture the castle walls in the foreground while keeping the skyline and Arthur's Seat in frame. The esplanade is free to access outside of ticketed events and offers a stable, flat surface to shoot from. (Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom)
