Ruelle du Plateau - Demers Street
This stretch of revitalized back alley in the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood offers a surprisingly lush and colourful contrast to the typical urban laneway. The alley is lined with murals, painted fences, potted plants, and community gardens that residents have transformed into a living outdoor space, giving you layered compositions with texture and colour at every turn. Shoot from a low angle to emphasize the tunnel-like perspective down the lane, or position yourself mid-alley to use the converging walls and overhead greenery as a natural frame. Overcast days work best here since direct sunlight creates harsh shadows in the narrow corridor, while diffused light brings out the saturation in the painted surfaces. A 24-35mm lens lets you capture the full width of the scene without distortion. The alley is easily walkable and connects to a broader network of revitalized ruelles throughout the Plateau, making it worth dedicating a few hours to explore the surrounding blocks on foot.
