Rue Roy E
Rue Roy Est is a quiet residential street in the Plateau-Mont-Royal neighbourhood, lined with the classic Montreal triplex buildings that define the city's architectural identity. The iron staircases, colourful doors, and brick facades make this an ideal spot to practice urban composition, and you have plenty of material within a short walk in either direction. Shoot from street level looking down the block to use the staircases as repeating geometric elements, or get close to a single staircase to isolate its curves against the facade behind it. Overcast days work beautifully here, softening harsh shadows and bringing out the colours of painted brickwork and doors. Early morning keeps foot traffic light and gives you cleaner shots without parked cars dominating the foreground. A 35mm or 50mm lens suits the scale of the street well, keeping proportions natural without distorting the architecture. (Montreal, Quebec, Canada)
