Sacred Heart Catholic Church is a soaring limestone church near downtown Columbia, close to the university. It was built in the traditional Romanesque design with round-arched doorways and heavy stone walls. Dedicated in 1914, it's still an active parish today. The building sits photogenically on a corner lot, which adds to your shooting options. You can take the front straight on, or show more of the grandeur from across the street. Depending on your photography style it is very easy to move in close on the arched portals and the stonework, or point the camera up to capture the imposing height of the twin towers. Dusk is the perfect time to be here. The stone warms in low light, and blue hour gives you a deep sky behind it. Inside is traditional and well kept, a straightforward nave to shoot if you catch the church during open hours. It opens around Mass times rather than for drop-in visits, so try to time an interior shoot for just after mass has ended and be respectful of the worshippers. From the outside you can shoot freely off the public sidewalks any time and there is downtown parking close by. (Columbia, Missouri, United States)
