Saint Mary's Parish Church
Saint Mary's Parish Church is a medieval sandstone building perched on a rocky outcrop above the River Mersey, making it one of the most dramatically positioned churches in northwest England. The churchyard offers elevated views over the river and surrounding rooftops, and the worn gravestones in the foreground pair well with the tower as a backdrop. Shooting from the lower ground to the south lets you emphasize the height of the building against the sky, while a wide angle lens works well for capturing the full facade and its textured stonework. Early morning light catches the warm tones of the red sandstone particularly well, and overcast days soften harsh shadows in the churchyard. The site is freely accessible and centrally located, so it fits easily into a wider shoot of Stockport's historic town centre. (Stockport, Greater Manchester, England)
