Perched atop the Great Pyramid of Cholula, one of the largest pyramids in the world by volume, this 16th-century colonial church offers one of the most striking and symbolic compositions in all of Mexico, with layers of pre-Hispanic and Spanish history literally stacked beneath your feet. The classic shot frames the yellow church against the sky with Popocatépetl volcano looming behind it on clear days, best achieved from the base or mid-level of the pyramid mound for a wide perspective. A 16-35mm lens works well for capturing both the church and the surrounding cityscape. Early morning gives you soft light on the facade and the best chance of catching Popocatépetl free of clouds before midday haze sets in. The climb takes around 10 to 15 minutes via the main staircase, and the hilltop also offers sweeping panoramic views over Cholula and Puebla worth shooting in their own right.
