About Schloss Münster
Schloss Münster is the old Prince-Bishop's Palace, a long baroque residence in red brick and pale sandstone on the western edge of the old town in Münster. The palace dates back to the 1760s. Bombs badly damaged the interior in 1945, burning almost everything except the outer walls, so what stands now is the old exterior wrapped around a rebuilt interior. It's been the university's main building ever since. Schlossplatz is a big open square sitting directly in front of the palace so you can back up as much as you like and capture the whole three winged front in one frame. It faces east, which means morning sun comes straight up the square and lands perfectly on the entrance. Don't skip going round the back. The Schlossgarten is a peaceful landscaped park with ponds and old trees. Tucked inside it is the botanical garden, with lumps of the old fortress bastions still sitting among the flower beds. Everything outside is public and free at any hour. The palace is home to the university's administration, so treat the inside as offices rather than a museum.(Münster, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany)
