SeaGlass Carousel
SeaGlass Carousel sits inside a shell-shaped pavilion at the southern tip of Manhattan's Battery Park, offering a uniquely photogenic subject that blurs the line between sculpture and architecture. The translucent fish-shaped pods glow from within, making this an ideal low-light or night shoot when the internal illumination really pops against the surrounding darkness. Shooting through the curved glass walls of the pavilion adds a dreamlike layer of abstraction, while getting inside during operating hours lets you capture the spinning figures up close with a wide-angle or standard prime lens. Try longer exposures to render the rotating fish as streaks of color, or freeze individual pods mid-spin with a faster shutter. The pavilion is easily accessible on foot from the nearby Whitehall subway station, and weekday evenings tend to be less crowded, giving you more room to work without visitors in the frame.
