The Fulton Center is a unique transit hub in Lower Manhattan that connects nine subway lines. The building is a three storey glass pavilion with a soaring atrium. The highlight of the Center is the "Sky Reflector-Net", a dazzling, integrated artwork and daylight amplifying skylight. This circular glass skylight sits at the top of a conical dome that is is lined with polished aluminum panels attached to a cable net of over 10,000 stainless steel components. The panels reflect about 95 percent of the light hitting them and funnel daylight from the skylight down into the station below. The skylight is tilted 23 degrees to the south and positioned slightly off centre to catch as much sun as possible and dodge shadows from the surrounding buildings. The classic shot is straight up from the atrium floor where the concentric rings of aluminum panels taper toward the sky. The light shifts throughout the day as the sun moves across the opening. At night the panels glow with artificial light and the look changes completely. Fulton Center is free to enter and open during transit hours. (New York City, New York, USA)
