Senate of Canada Building
This stunning Beaux-Arts building served as Ottawa's Union Station before being transformed into the temporary home of Canada's Senate, and its grand facades, arched windows, and ornate stonework make it one of the most photogenic structures in the capital. The long colonnaded front elevation along Confederation Boulevard rewards wide-angle compositions, while moving in closer lets you isolate the carved details and repeating arches for tighter architectural shots. Early morning light rakes beautifully across the stone facade from the east, bringing out texture and depth, while overcast days keep harsh shadows off the intricate detailing. A 24-70mm lens covers most compositions well, though a wider lens helps when shooting from across the street. The building sits within a pedestrian-friendly area near the National War Memorial and Major's Hill Park, so you can easily combine it with a broader shoot of the surrounding precinct.
