Sendero al Fitz Roy

The trail toward Fitz Roy outside El Chaltén offers one of Patagonia's most dramatic foreground and background combinations, where the milky turquoise waters of the Río de las Vueltas wind through a wide glacial valley with the jagged towers of the Fitz Roy massif rising behind. From the mirador along the path, you can frame the river's braided channels against the mountain silhouette using a wide angle lens to capture the full sweep of the landscape. A telephoto lens lets you compress the distance and isolate the peaks above the valley floor. Morning light works best here, with golden tones catching the granite spires before clouds typically build through the afternoon. Wear layers and be prepared for sudden wind.
