Located about an hour away from the Twin Cities, Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge encompasses more than 30,000 acres of pristine landscapes that include wetlands, oak savannas, and prairies. This diverse habitat makes it a mecca for wildlife photographers seeking to capture everything from migratory waterfowl to elusive predators like bobcats and coyotes. The refuge is especially noted for its large population of sandhill cranes, which provide a striking subject against the natural backdrop. Year-round, you can also photograph deer, various songbirds, and an array of waterfowl. Numerous trails and observation platforms offer strategic vantage points for photographers, making it easier to get that perfect shot without disturbing the wildlife. Best visited early morning or late afternoon for optimal lighting conditions, don't forget to bring a telephoto lens to capture the details of distant animals. No entrance fee is required, but be aware that parts of the refuge may be closed during certain seasons for habitat restoration. (Sherburne County, Minnesota, USA)
