Spencer Brook School is a classic one room country schoolhouse tucked away on a quiet back road. A local carpenter and his neighbours finished it in 1877, and it was the first school in the county. Classes ran until 1945, then it sat forgotten until it was lovingly restored by the locals two decades later. It's a simple wooden building sitting in open farmland. Frame it with the fields running off behind and you get the whole country feel in one shot. The big blue sky does a lot of work out here, so it pays to be patient and wait for clear weather. Low sun late in the day skims across the siding and every board shows. The school faces north and stays shaded through the middle of the day, so plan for either sunrise or sunset light. Winter gives the schoolhouse a whole different feel. Snow flattens the surroundings and leaves the building as the only thing in the frame. Inside is only open during historical society events but there is lots of space to take your time and experiment with capturing the outside. (Spencer Brook, Minnesota, USA)
