About Slaakbrug
Slaakbrug is the big steel arch bridge carrying the road off Sint Philipsland and over the Schelde-Rijn canal. The bridge really stands out surrounded only by flat fields and a dead straight canal with one curve of steel over the top. The canal is the shipping route between Antwerp and Rotterdam, so there are barges going under it all day. If your timing (and patience) is right you will be able add one into the frame and add the perfect sense of scale to your shot. You can also get down to the bank, so you will be able to shoot along the water so the arch sits high over the channel. On the bridge itself you can use leading lines to highlight how the steelwork stacks up and repeats away from you. The flat water underneath creates amazing reflections of whatever the sky happens to be doing. It's also a fun spot to in winter fog, if you get the chance, when the arch fades in and out. Plus since this is such quiet countryside it is an amazing spot to experiment with nighttime long exposures and drone photography. Remember it's a working road bridge so keep an eye out for cars if you are shooting from the bridge deck. (Sint Philipsland, Zeeland, Netherlands)
