Smailholm Tower
Originally built in the 15th century or early 16th century by the Pringle family, this tower was built to protect its occupants from English raids. English soldiers attacked the tower in 1543, 1544 and 1546. The castle was successfully defended against the English in 1640, by Sir Andrew Ker of Greenhead. Sir Walter Scott, visited his paternal grandfather here as a boy. Scott spent considerable time at the tower during his youth.
