Smallpox Hospital
The ruins of this gothic Renwick-designed hospital sit at the southern tip of Roosevelt Island, offering a rare combination of crumbling stone architecture and sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline and East River. Shoot the arched window openings with the midtown skyline framed inside them for a dramatic contrast between decay and modern city life. The stabilized facade has strong vertical lines and textured stonework that reward a wide-angle lens up close, while a longer focal length lets you compress the ruin against the Queensboro Bridge in the background. Golden hour light from the west catches the stone beautifully in late afternoon, and overcast days bring out the moody atmosphere without harsh shadows. The site is freely accessible via the Roosevelt Island tram or F train, and the surrounding lawn gives you room to experiment with low angles that emphasize the height of the remaining walls.
