St. Anne's Church is a beautifully preserved wooden church built in 1894, sitting quietly among mature trees on Vancouver Island with a small historic graveyard beside it. The log-cabin construction and weathered wood exterior give it a timeless quality that photographs well in almost any light, but overcast days are ideal for bringing out the texture and tone of the aged timber without harsh shadows. Shoot the facade straight on with a wide to standard focal length to capture the full character of the building, or get low among the graveyard headstones and use them as foreground elements with the church behind. The ornate 19th-century headstones reward close compositions on their own. Early morning light filtering through the surrounding trees adds atmosphere, and the active parish means you should plan around service times to avoid disrupting visitors. Street parking is easy and the site is walkable in minutes. (Parksville, British Columbia, Canada)
