Chrome Island sits just off the southern tip of Denman Island in British Columbia, a compact rocky islet topped with a historic white lighthouse that makes for a striking subject against the surrounding Strait of Georgia. You can only reach it by boat, so plan accordingly, whether that means chartering a water taxi from Buckley Bay or paddling out by kayak. Once you are close, work the angles from the water rather than the shore, framing the lighthouse against the sky with the rocky, barnacle-covered shoreline in the foreground. Overcast days soften the harsh contrast between the white tower and bright sky, making it easier to expose properly. A telephoto lens lets you compress the scene and isolate the structure, while a wider lens captures the full islet in context. Early morning light coming from the east catches the tower face cleanly, and if the strait is calm, you can pick up reflections from a low angle off the water.
