Rovinj sits on a small peninsula on the Istrian coast, its old town packed tight with pastel houses that rise straight out of the Adriatic and climb to a single high point crowned by the bell tower of St. Euphemia. That tower is what makes the whole scene work, a tall Venetian-style campanile modelled on the one at St. Mark's in Venice, topped with a figure of the saint, standing well above the rooftops so the town reads as a neat pyramid with an obvious focal point. The houses crowding down to the waterline give you texture and warm colour, and because the town faces west into the open sea, this is first and foremost a sunset location, with the sun dropping behind the peninsula and silhouetting the tower against the sky. The classic vantage is the long breakwater and pier that runs south from town, which is west-facing and takes in the old town and the bell tower across the water, while the jetties and rocks out past the ACI Marina let you look back and catch the tower against a fiery sky. After the sun goes down the scene only gets better, because blue hour brings out the warm glow of the town lights against the deep blue sky and the calm harbour throws a clean reflection, so bring a tripod and shoot a long exposure to smooth the water and pull in that colour. A wide to standard lens captures the full sweep of the peninsula, while a longer lens lets you isolate the tower and the stacked facades. For a different angle you can climb the bell tower itself for a small cash fee, a steep set of wooden steps that opens onto a rooftop and sea panorama, and the coastal paths of Punta Corrente park south of town give you more distant views back across the water. The waterfront is busy through the day and the best sunset and blue-hour spots fill up early, so stake out your position ahead of time, and early morning is the quiet alternative with soft light and empty promenades.
