Tucked into the high desert landscape of northern New Mexico, these adobe ruins are what remain of one of the oldest Catholic mission churches in the United States, dating back to 1619. The crumbling walls rise from the earth in organic, sculptural forms, their weathered texture catching light beautifully in the golden hours. Shoot low and close to emphasize the rough adobe surface against the sky, or step back to frame the ruins within the surrounding landscape and distant mountains. The old cemetery nearby adds quiet, layered context to your compositions. Early morning and late afternoon light rakes across the irregular surfaces and creates strong shadow detail, which is far more interesting than flat midday sun. A wide angle lens works well for environmental shots, while a short telephoto lets you isolate wall details and textures. The site is on Taos Pueblo land, so verify access permissions before visiting. (Taos, New Mexico, United States)
