Stately Pleasure Dome
Stately Pleasure Dome is a broad, pale granite dome rising dramatically above the Tuolumne River in Yosemite's high country, offering a classic Sierra Nevada composition that rewards both wide-angle and telephoto work. From the pullout along Tioga Pass Road, you can frame the dome reflected in the river's calm stretches, especially effective in early morning when the water is still and the light rakes across the granite at a low angle. A 24-70mm lens handles most situations well, but a longer focal length lets you compress the dome against the surrounding peaks. Walk the short distance toward the riverbank to find the best reflection angles and foreground interest among the grasses and boulders. Visit in summer and early fall when Tioga Road is open, and plan for golden hour shooting when warm light turns the white granite a rich amber. Crowds are lighter here than at Yosemite Valley, giving you more time and space to work the scene. (Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite National Park, California, United States)
