About Stegen am Ammersee

Stegen am Ammersee is a peaceful lakeshore hamlet that features two rustic boathouses paired with an incredible view. The lake faces south from here, so on a clear morning the Alps stack up at the far end behind them. That's a frame worth chasing. Using a longer lens lets you pull the mountains in tight over the boathouses, or you can use a wide lens to let the water carry most of it. Getting low lets you experiment with where you place the boathouses in the frame. On a still morning the surface goes flat enough so you can experiment with using reflection photography to highlight one of the boathouses. Mornings tend to be clearer for the mountains, but evenings are better light on the boathouses themselves so you will have to decide which one suits your shooting style better. In winter the sun drops straight down behind the bigger boathouse. In summer it sets off to the side and lights the roof edge instead. Aim to stay for blue hour, since one of them is lit after dark and holds a long exposure well. The boathouses are right beside the Seehaus beer garden, with a few free spaces out front and a bigger paid car park at the edge of the village. (Stegen, Bavaria, Germany)
