Sun Life Building
The Sun Life Building is one of Montreal's most commanding Beaux-Arts structures, its massive stone facade and classical columns making it a rewarding subject for architectural photography. Dominion Square sits directly in front, giving you space to step back and capture the full height and symmetry of the building with a wide angle lens. For tighter detail shots, the carved stonework, pilasters, and ornate cornice reward a longer focal length. Shooting from the corners of the square lets you work in two-directional perspective lines that emphasize the building's imposing scale. Overcast days are ideal since they eliminate harsh shadows across the facade's deep relief details, though early morning on a sunny day can produce dramatic raking light across the stone. The surrounding trees in the square offer natural framing opportunities in warmer months. Street level is fully accessible and the open plaza gives you plenty of room to compose freely.
