Sunshine Bridge is a striking cantilever through-truss bridge spanning the Mississippi River in rural St. James Parish, its graceful steel arches rising above the wide, slow-moving river and surrounding sugarcane fields. You can shoot from the levee roads on either bank, where low angles emphasize the bridge's massive scale against the sky, or position yourself further back to capture the full span reflected in the river's surface during calm conditions. Early morning is ideal, with soft golden light raking across the structure and mist sometimes hovering over the water. A mid-range zoom in the 24-70mm range handles most compositions well, while a telephoto lets you compress the bridge against distant treelines. The levee access roads are unpaved but generally passable; arriving at sunrise on a weekday means minimal traffic on the bridge itself and quieter surroundings.
