About Szare Szeregi Monument
The Szare Szeregi Monument sits peacefully on a small hill south of Barry's Bay. The Polish Canadian community built it in 1995 to resemble a bombed out building, in memory of the Polish scouts and guides killed in the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. Every piece of this monument was carefully designed all the way down to the steps up the hill with each one carrying the name of a Warsaw street. Shooting low from the foot of the stairs lets you line those names up toward the broken wall above. Later in the day is when the carvings are easier to highlight. Low sun spreads across the steps and throws the letters into relief, where as flat midday light fills them in and they disappear. Inside there is a relief panel, and the open roof so an overcast day highlights the interior better than a bright one. The monument sits right off Old Barrys Bay Road with lots of room to park. The site is open to visitors and has information boards to help share their story. (Barry's Bay, Ontario, Canada)
