About Teatro Campoamor

Oviedo's Teatro Campoamor has been holding opera performances since 1892, and it's still the city's main stage. It's named after the Asturian poet Ramón de Campoamor. Fighting in the 1930s left little more than part of the front standing, so the theatre had to be completely rebuilt and finally reopened in late 1948. The building has a classical look with an amazing Italian feel, and its big formal front faces a small plaza, so you will have lots of space to experiment with compositions. Out in that plaza is a sculpture of a young girl walking, that makes a great foreground and gives a sense of scale to the theatre behind her. Stepping back across the square lets you fit the whole front in, then you can work your way around the sides for angles that highlight the length of the building. Blue hour is the perfect time to be here, when the street lamps start to come on but the sky still holds some colour. Show nights create the opportunity to experiment with street photography, with all the people gathering at the doors before the curtain goes up. The outside is free to wander, but you'll need a ticket to a performance to access inside. Plaza de la Escandalera and Campo de San Francisco park are both a short walk away if you want to keep exploring while you are in the area. (Oviedo, Asturias, Spain)
