About Teignmouth Back Beach
Back Beach sits on the estuary side of Teignmouth, right on the River Teign. It's a strip of sand along a working harbour, with fishing boats hauled up on it and plenty more moored just offshore. Looking across the bay, you've got Shaldon on the far bank, with its red sandstone cliffs and wooded slopes climbing up behind the houses. The tide levels change the whole view throughout the day. At low tide the boats settle onto the sand with their keels showing and you can even walk right out among them. As the tide returns they slowly start to lift up and the wet sand starts creates amazing reflections to play with. Check the tide tables before you head out to find the ideal water levels that match your shooting style. The beachfront faces to the west so the evening sun drops straight up the valley and puts colour across the whole channel. Mornings work differently, with the light coming off the sea behind you and hitting the Shaldon front square on. There are a couple of pubs facing the water if you need to wait for just the right light in the evenings, and the ferry across to Shaldon leaves from here if you want to also shoot Teignmouth from the other side.
