The Sanctuary
The Sanctuary is a former residence located just beside Westminster Abbey. It is so named because it was once a place of refuge for anyone seeking refuge, a refuge founded by Edward the Confessor. Notably Queen Elizabeth Woodville, wife of Edward IV took sanctuary here in 1470 when she gave birth to Edward V. When Edward V was deposed. Shortly after becoming part of the Church Commission in the 1800s it was renovated to be used as offices. Since that time the function and use of the building has changed and today is home to office and residences. (London, England, UK)
