The Seattle Great Wheel
The Seattle Great Wheel sits at the end of Pier 57 on the downtown waterfront, offering a striking combination of industrial steel structure, Elliott Bay, and the city skyline in a single frame. Shoot from the waterfront promenade to get the full wheel with the bay and Olympic Mountains as a backdrop, or position yourself further south along the pier walkway to use the wooden dock as a foreground leading line. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full scene, while a short telephoto helps isolate the wheel against the sky. Blue hour is the sweet spot here, when the wheel's LED lights glow against the fading sky and city lights begin to reflect on the water. The area is flat and easy to walk, and you have enough room to shift your angle significantly depending on how much of the waterfront context you want to include.
