About Tizi Tishka Pass

Tizi Tishka Pass is the highest road pass in Morocco as it weaves through the High Atlas Mountains between Marrakech and Ouarzazate. The climb starts among the walnut trees around the village of Taddert. Once you're past the village the trees drop away, and the mountains open up into bare tan and ochre slopes with a green line of trees following the river far below. The road winds up through a series of tight hairpin bends, with amazing pullouts along the way look straight down over all the switchbacks. At the top you'll find an amazing lookout with views over the surrounding ridges stretching out in almost every direction. If you bring a longer lens in your kit you can experiment with picking out the hairpins from one of the pullouts, especially with a truck working its way up the bends to highlight how tight the turns really are. Ideally try to time your drive for early morning or late afternoon, when the low sun shows off the ridges. The road is paved the whole way and there's no tolls along it. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time so you can stop as often as you like since the view changes around almost every bend. Sections of the road do close after a heavy snowfall so make sure to keep an eye on the weather if you are planning a winter shooting adventure. (Tizi Tishka Pass, Atlas Mountains, Morocco)
