About Setti Fadma Waterfalls
The Setti Fadma Waterfalls (Les cascades de Setti Fadma) are a series of waterfalls tumbling down the mountainside above the little village of Setti Fatma. The first (and most popular) waterfall pours down a dark rock face into a pool surrounded by big boulders, with green plants covering the cliffs on either side. There's even a little café tucked right beside it where you can sit with a mint tea and watch the water come crashing down while you wait for just the right light to appear. The upper falls take a bit more effort to reach, but each one has its own character, and the views back down the valley make the extra effort worth it. Spring is the best time to visit, when snowmelt from the mountains increases the water flowing down the falls. Make sure to bring a tripod in your kit so you can experiment with a slow shutter speed to smooth out the water. The shade in the narrow valley helps to keep the light nice and soft. It's about an hour and a half drive from Marrakech, and the village itself is a fun mix of colourful cafés, with tables and chairs set right out over the rushing river. From the village the trail heads upstream, crossing the river on small footbridges and climbing over big boulders before reaching the first waterfall in about 30 to 45 minutes. And you'll find plenty of local guides at the start of the trail if you'd like some help with the route. Try to get there on a weekday morning, since it gets very busy on weekends.
