Tofino Beach
Tonquin Beach is a rugged, wild stretch of coastline just outside Tofino, framed by dense old-growth forest, sea stacks, and kelp-strewn rocks that give it a dramatically different character from the long surf beaches nearby. You can shoot the jagged rock formations in the foreground with the open Pacific behind them, or turn toward the treeline where gnarled spruce and cedar lean over the shore. Low tide exposes tidepools and textured rock shelves that work well as leading elements, especially with a wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range. Sunrise brings soft, directional light with minimal crowds, and overcast days actually suit this location well, muting the contrast and bringing out the greens of the surrounding forest. The trail from the Tonquin Park trailhead takes about ten minutes on foot, so pack light and wear waterproof footwear on the rocky shoreline. (Tofino, British Columbia, Canada)
