Tour de Sauvabelin (Sauvabelin Tower) is a beautiful spot where you have both incredible views and unique architecture to capture at the same place. The all wooden tower features two spiral staircases winding around a central post, and each other, leading up to the lookout with amazing views over the forest above Lausanne. One staircase carries you up and the other brings you down, so the pair twist past each other like a strand of DNA. From the bottom landing, you can look straight up to capture them coiling overhead in an intricate pattern. The top platform sits above the surrounding treetops with beautiful views in all directions. Looking to the south you can capture the cityscape as it flows down the hillside toward Lake Geneva. You can experiment with using a longer lens to stack the rooftops, water plus the Alps on the far shore into tight layers. Late afternoon is the best time to be here, when the low western light spreads across the cityscape, warming the mountains across the water. The tower sits a short walk up the hill from the Lac de Sauvabelin and there is lots of parking all around the Forêt de Sauvabelin park. An automatic gate limits number of people who can be on the stairs and the tower does close in bad weather. You are able to check the tower's live status on it's website. You can easily pair it with a loop around Lac de Sauvabelin if you have to wait for people to clear or the tower to re-open. (Lausanne, Vaud, Switzerland)
