Train at the Science and Tech Museum
The locomotive on display outside the Canada Science and Technology Museum is a massive, weathered steam engine that rewards close attention to detail, from the rusted iron wheels and riveted boiler to the weathered paintwork that catches light beautifully. Get low and shoot along the length of the train to emphasize its scale, or move in tight with a macro or short telephoto lens to isolate mechanical details like the drive rods, gauges, and wheel spokes. Overcast days work especially well here, as soft diffused light reduces harsh shadows in the deep mechanical recesses and brings out texture across the metal surfaces. Early morning on a clear day can give you warm side lighting that adds depth to the cylindrical forms. The train sits in an open outdoor area, so you have room to move around and experiment with both wide environmental shots and compressed detail work. (Ottawa, Ontario, Canada)
