Tranøy Fyr is a compact red and white lighthouse perched on a small rocky island in northern Norway, connected to the shore by a wooden footbridge that doubles as one of the best compositional tools on site. The bridge makes a natural leading line drawing the eye straight to the lighthouse, and with the jagged Lofoten peaks rising across Vestfjorden in the background, the layering of foreground, water, and mountains is hard to beat. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the full scene, while a longer focal length lets you compress the mountains behind the structure. Shoot during the golden hour for warm side light on the red paintwork, or take advantage of the summer midnight sun, which keeps the sky bright and colorful well past midnight. The area is quiet and uncrowded, and you can walk the rocky shoreline to find lower angles close to the water. (Hamarøy Municipality, Nordland, Norway)
